A dozen apprentices from the two depots constructed a comprehensive electricity infrastructure at Ardeer for the purpose of learning more about their trade. The yard replaces the previous one at the former depot at Werribee and includes increased features that will enable Powercor's apprentices to gain more practical experience and skills. Powercor recently combined two previous depots from Werribee and Sunshine and relocated to one location in Ardeer. The 10 million dollars move has enabled Powercor to better service its customers in Melbourne's rapidly growing western suburbs from the purpose built, six hectare site. Powercor regional asset manager Glen Smith said constructing the yard gave apprentices great experience in building a project from the ground up. "The more experienced apprentices were given the role of work site leaders and they gained leadership skills through the project," he said "All the works were done by apprentices and mentors only stepped in when their advice was needed."
