Alcoa delays idling of Intalco aluminium smelter

Alcoa will delay the idling of its Intalco aluminium smelter in Ferndale, Washington, until the second quarter of the year, citing favourable changes in raw material and energy costs. It is more cost effective in the near term to temporarily keep the smelter online in order to provide molten metal to the Ferndale casthouse, which will continue to operate even after the smelter is idled, the company said on 19 January.
