The Chinese government is taking more administrative steps to calm increasing public anger about the country’s poor environmental safety record, highlighted by a devastating fatal explosion in the northeast China port city of Tianjin last week. The explosion on 12 August at a chemical warehouse owned by private-sector firm Ruihai Logistics disrupted VLCC unloading, but China’s maritime safety administration said on 17 August operations have largely resumed. The explosion, which saw no damage to major oil and gas infrastructure in the area, follows an explosion in April at private-sector firm Dragon Aromatics’ petrochemical facilities at Gulei in south China’s Fujian province.
