Indian utilities to resume coal imports in 2014

The Indian power generation sector’s rising demand for coal and stagnating domestic output are likely to force the country’s coal consumers back into the global market in 2014, particularly if dominant producer Coal India falls short of its production targets. Indian coal imports could increase to 135mn-170mn t in 2014 from 120mn t in 2013, according to market participants. Coal fires around 80pc of India’s power generation, with demand growing by more than 10pc/yr. Imports are expected to account for 21pc of overall coal demand of 770mn t in 2013- 14, according to the Reserve Bank of India.
