US coal exports to end strong in 2013, dip in 2014

US coal exports this year will come close to last year’s record levels following robust shipments under legacy contracts and aggressive rate cuts by eastern railroads. One major producer said last month that US coal exports will total about 115mn short tons (104mn t) in 2013, short of last year’s record 126mn st but above prior company forecasts for as little as 110mn st. Industry estimates earlier this year were less than 100mn st.
