US coke burns drop in 2011

US electric power and industrial sectors combined to burn less coke in 2011 than in the previous year, according to the Energy Information Administration (EIA). Cheap compet- ing fuels for most of the year were primarily responsible for the lower consumption. The two sectors consumed 5.7mn st of petroleum coke last year, down 6.6pc from the 6.1mn st burned in 2010. The sectors in December consumed 408,000st of coke, which was 18.2pc lower than the corresponding period a year earlier.
