UK’s Drax halves annual coke burn

UK power producer Drax, Europe’s largest coal-fired gen- erator, halved its petroleum coke usage on the year to just 100,000mt in 2011. The 100,000t was burned in the first half of last year, with the generator choosing not to burn any coke in the last six months of the year, instead opting to focus on coal and biomass. Drax’s coal burn remained steady over the year at 9.1mn mt, marginally lower than 2010’s 9.4mn mt, and accounted for 87pc of fuel consumed at the plant.
