COASTAL OBSERVATIONS:Living shorelines: Are structures necessary?

North Carolina has a long history of experimenting with living shorelines (Seneca et al. 1976). When it became apparent that some marsh plantings were continuing to erode, a search for longer lasting, higher wave-exposure solutions was initiated. Field observations discovered a variety of accidental structures that when combined with stabilized marshes were providing effective, long-term shoreline protection (Rogers 1989).
