GHOST GRASS: ETIOLATED TILLER SYNDROME

2014 was a generally warm year, with average monthly temperatures exceeding the 1981-2010 average every month except August which was cooler in comparison. Rainfall was more variable. Following a very wet and windy end to winter, spring was significantly drier with just 77% and 90% of the 1981-2010 average falling in March and April respectively. May saw a return of wet weather before conditions turned dry again in June and July when hot dry weather dominated for a prolonged period. Wet conditions reappeared in August prior to drier weather returning again in September when only 22% of the 1981-2010 average rainfall was experienced making it the second driest September since 1910. Normal rainfall levels returned in October and November, accompaniedby a continuation of mild temperaturesallowing growth to endure late into the autumn.
