In the late 1990s STRI's Dr Andy Newell adapted techniques used to predict environmental conditions in forest ecosystems to predict the levels of natural light reaching the playing surface in a stadium environment.This approach has proved increasinglyrelevant and important in both the design and management of modern stadia.The initial trials were undertaken at Chelsea's Stamford Bridge stadium with the first commercial studies being undertaken for Ipswich Town AFC and at Twickenham for the RFU.
