摘要

It's often said that before you judge someone you should walk a mile in their shoes. We took this idea to heart when studying the behaviour of giant anteaters. To really understand these animals, we needed to develop a way of observing them that wouldallow them to tell us about their lives but wouldn't influence how the story was told. Walking was the way to go. Giant anteaters are instantly recognised by people around the world, but surprisingly little is known about them - fewer than 20 scientificpapers have ever been published on the species. In Brazil, giant anteaters live in the Cerrado, an extensive woodland and savannah area, which is one of the world's most impor tant biodiversity hotspots. Both the species and its environment are threatened by agricultural encroachment and by fire, both natural and (illegally) started by people.
