Alan's new beat

As the new face of natural history television, Alan Titchmarsh has his share of critics. But, as he tells James Fair, they should save their judgements forthe series. Towards the end of last year, it emerged that Alan Titchmarsh had been dug up from the cheap and cheerful flowerbed of Ground Force and replanted into the wilder, more hallowed terrain of natural history television. I've got to admit that I was sceptical about the move, given that he's best known for being a tv gardener and giving advice about growing foxgloves, tiger lilies and snapdragons than for any knowledge he might possess about wild dogs, big cats or endangered reptiles.
