As an introduction to the pioneering research work at Loughborough University it is worth looking at the potential impact on our consultancy role. In our consultancy work in developing sports pitch facilities, STRI is becoming increasingly involved inthe design and control of the drainage flow discharging from pitch outlet drains. Clearly there is a need to control flooding in urban areas from watercourses and public surface water sewers. Indeed there are numerous examples of surface water floodingoccurring in urban areas in recent years, and there certainly appears to be a trend for more intense periods of rainfall to occur, possibly associated with climate change. The scenario is exacerbated by the extended urbanisation of land resulting in more rapid surface runoff from roads and other hard surfaces.
