This article considers the selection of grasses for sports surfaces. The aim is to set out some general principles and then focus on one very specific use. Generally, choosing grasses for sports surfaces really comes down to three things; where you arein the world, what sport will be played on the surface and the management regime. These last two are very closely linked to each other. The management regime has to be developed and implemented to provide the desired surface. To achieve the right standards, this surface has to be durable and meet the surface interaction requirements for both the player and his equipment (eg balls of various sizes). In effect we need to match the needs of the game to the characteristics of the grass.
