It is over ten years since Royal Lytham & St Annes last held The Open Championship after hosting it in both 1996 and 2001 when Tom Lehman and David Duval respectively received the Claret Jug as victors.This year will have bittersweet memories remembering with excitement, tinged with poignancy, the truly unforgettable wins of Seve Ballesteros here at Lytham in 1979 and 1988.Who can forget Seve punching the air when another long putt went in or a miraculous shot from the deep rough landed on the greenfollowed by that beaming infectious smile. The 2012 Open will present another set of challenges to the players and, following on from the success in 2011 from home grown talent, will we have another UK Champion thrust into the limelight? It is all a mouth-watering prospect.
