This is the fisher; the largest of the martens. It seldom fishes, is often mistaken for a wolverine and, in any case, is almost never seen. Jonathan Wright had been in the field in Alberta for six years before he happened across his first one. He was, he says, thrilled. My first encounter with a wild fisher came after decades of study borne of intense fascination. My research had led me to believe that I would never actually see one in the wild, regardless of time spent in their native haunts - theywere that elusive. And then one day fortune arrived in the form of a great black bird to prove me spectacularly wrong.
