Seek out the forgotten treasures of Sri Lanka's ancient capital city by leaving the architectural ruins behind and heading into the forest. Our driver Christie was thoroughly bemused. We had come to Polonnaruwa, one of the key ruined cities of Sri Lanka's cultural triangle and the site of a world-famous recumbent Buddha - and we had spent the afternoon watching monkeys. Yes, it's true. While most visitors to Polonnaruwa satisfy themselves with a tour of the brick and stone remains of the island's former capital, we had gone into the forest of cassia and Ceylon oak (not really an oak, by the way) next to the main site.
