The aerification of turf is an invasive and visible process that ultimately leads to improved turf. Aerification helps to eliminate soil compaction, stimulate shoot growth, and eliminate layered soils. It can also add macroporosity back to soil, whichis beneficial because those are the pores that aid water drainage from soil. Aerification may also help eliminate thatch and remove organic matter, although we tend to view vertical mowing as a more suitable first step if you've really got thatch problems.
