The government named the ￡600m Mersey Gateway Project as one of its top 40 priority projects in its National Infrastructure Plan, and the advance remediation works carried out by Celtic Technologies had to be completed before the project proper could begin. A crucial part of the works was remediation of Catalyst Trade Park, a 5.6 ha site to be redeveloped into an embankment and road junction for the bridge.
