Writing in support of advanced biofuel incentives that move beyond corn-based ethanol, U.S. Sens. Ben Cardin (D-Md.) and Susan Collins (R-Maine) and eight of their Senate colleagues on January 29 wrote a letter to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Gina McCarthy urging her to reconsider proposed reductions to the renewable volume obligations (RVOs) under the federal Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS). “We are concerned that reducing the RVOs for advanced biofuels production is the wrong approach. … If the final rule were to include the proposed level of 2.2 billion gallons for advanced biofuels, or within a range from 2.0 billion to 2.51 billion gallons, the 2014 RVO will nearly be halved, thus taking away any practical incentive for future investment in advanced biofuels,” the Senators wrote in their letter.
