The Port of Rotterdam – Europe’s main port for the handling, storage and production of biofuels – reported in mid-March the throughput of these products increased in 2012 by 24% to 5.9 million metric tons (tonnes) compared to 2011. “This can mainly be attributed to biodiesel; its import and export volumes both increased, by a total of 1.5 million tonnes. In contrast, the throughput of ethanol dropped by 17% to 1.4 million tonnes and that of ETBE [ethyl tert- butyl ether] dropped by 8% to [600,000] tonnes,” according to a statement issued by the Port.
