Schizophrenia: Current trends

摘要

Schizophrenia is a chronic, relatively common disorder across the world. While its chronicity and the attendant disability can impose a severe burden on sufferers and their caregivers, tantalizing clues such as brain-related pathogenic abnormalities have brought the promise of more effective remedies. The present issue updates our state of knowledge about selected aspects of schizophrenia. The first two articles focus on inherited and noninherited risk factors. Notwithstanding the promise of scientific research, social realities demand pragmatic solutions for the daily lives of affected individuals and their relatives. Hence the other articles in this issue reflect on pressing issues, particularly in developing countries where the majority of individuals with schizophrenia reside.
