The photonic band structures of 2-D photoniccrystals consisting of cylindrical dielectric rods on a square and ona triangular lattice are computed by a layer-KKR method. Thematrices involved in the present method are substantially smallerthan those required for the plane-wave method. Unlike the KKRmethod, a root searching prolengths is not needed. In addition,with this method, the attenuation lengths for frequencies within theforbidden bands are computed together with the band structure.Reflection and transmission characteristics of crystals of finitethicknesses, as well as defective and composite crystals, are also computed.
