Analysis 1 U.S. Government Space Budget Overview

The Pentagon released its FY09 budget request on February 4, 2008, in conjunction with President George W. Bush's $3 trillion federal budget. While the federal budget request to Congress hits domestic programs hard, the $515.4 billion defense package is an increase of around 7.5 percent over FY08 funding, not including money for operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. The request includes a $70 billion "bridge" that will be a down payment on war funding for FY09. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates told reporters that the war money request would be uncertain, in part because FY08 requests are still up in the air, with $102.5 billion of the president's FY08 supplemental request not yet appropriated. Additional supplemental requests over and above the $70 billion are likely later this year. An estimated $21 billion will go to Energy Department nuclear weapons and other defense-related programs.
