Using FPGAs to create high-performance DSP applications

Are the rules for the selection of "real-time" operating systems (RTOS) for embedded digital signal processing (DSP) different from those for general purpose processors and microcontrollers? In this first feature the OS definitions, the options, the similarities and the essential differences between single processor and multiple processor systems are reviewed. After defining the criteria a second paper will explore how one of the latest RTOS meet the requirements.
