Today's embedded system design teams face ever increasing pressures to be "first-to-market". The ability to quickly compare and identify the best embedded processor and IP core candidates for their applications has become increasingly important. For many years, the only alternative was Dhrystone MIPS (millions of instructions per second), a short synthetic benchmark intended to measure integer computation performance and string operations. By the mid-1990s, Dhrystone had outlived its usefulness, and designers actively began to look for a new kind of benchmark that would provide insights into how a given processor would actually perform in a real-world application.
