Hybrid vehicles have been the subject of motor manufacturers' attentions for many years, and are widely recognized as the most likely evolutionary step from today's gasoline and diesel engines to the truly alternative powerplants of the future such as fuel cells. With this evolution in mind, hybrid vehicle activity has featured as a major part of most manufacturers' R&D programs. This belief has also been reflected in the substantial investment by Tier One automotive suppliers such as Valeo.
