More than ever, failure analysis today is typified by the need for accurate, high-quality results that point to the most probable failure mode using the most appropriate techniques and provided in a timely manner at a competitive cost. While that is probably a run-on sentence, it illustrates the many goals that a typical failure analysis activity must achieve to be considered successful in today's environment. In short, the analysis process must exceed the expectations of demanding external customers and internal partners. One absolute necessity for achieving these failure analysis goals is to learn from as well as benchmark others in the industry, not only to understand what issues they are encountering and how they are applying the latest tools and techniques to resolve them but also to know what type of metrics (analysis cycle time, lab efficiency, success rate, etc.) they are achieving.
