The preparation and evaluation of a blood smear should be considered as an invaluable diagnostic tool, which can be inexpensive, non-time consuming, and easily/performed on a routine clinical basis (Box 2). Blood smears often add considerable diagnostic information, which can help the practitioner offer the best medical care to patients.
