Multiple epidermal inclusion cysts after axillary liposuction-curettage: a rare complication of a frequent procedure

Radical skin excision techniques, skin sparing techniques with combined selective gland removal, manual shaving with different instruments, as well as minimally invasive strategies such as liposuction-curettage (LC) have proven to be effective for the treatment of severe focal axillary hyperhidrosis. Although minimally invasive techniques have shown a relative low rate of side-effects, a variety of minor to moderate, mostly temporary, side-effects have been described.A 35-year-old female Caucasian patient presented at our department for treatment of bilateral focal axillary hyperhidrosis. Previous treatment with external application of aluminum chloride salts (20%) and systemic medication with sage were not successful. Injections with botulinum toxin (BTX) were refused by the patient, as permanent sweat reduction was desired. Iodine-starch test revealed a hyperhidrotic area in the axillary region with a maximum in the central hair-bearing area. Gravimetry was performed showing a severe sweat rate of 119 mg/min.
