Remote chemical injection: darting in practice

Remote chemical injection (RCI) is colloquially known as darting but can also include the use of pole syringes. Most commonly associated with zoo and wildlife veterinarians, these techniques are becoming more commonly applied by veterinary colleaguesin the management of stray or aggressive small or large animals, as well as in the circus, television and movie industries. The use of remote techniques is not limited to the induction of anaesthesia; they can be used in the administration of any therapeutic agent that can be given via the intramuscular route. This article reviews the types of systems available, the use and maintenance of these systems and considerations when darting. It also looks at the legislative issues surrounding these useful therapeutic modalities.
