In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in an approach to the management of skin disease in underdeveloped regions of the world that is based on the principles of community dermatology. The key issue in this field has been the recognition that in most developing countries in both rural and urban areas, skin disease is a common problem affecting up to 6o% of the population. In practice, this poses a huge work load at primary care level that is compounded by the fact that the conditions are often ineffectively managed and result in a disproportionate cost on household and state budgets.
