Comparative Studies on Seedlings Production of Some Vegetable Crops with Various Agricultural Media

SEEDS of tomato, sweet pepper and cucumber were sown in trays of 84cells. Seven different media were used to seedling production as follows: PV(peatmoss + Vermiculite 1:1 v/v, PS (Peatmoss + Sand 1:1 v.v), PF (Peatmoss + Foam 1:1 v/v), SV (Sand+Vermiculite 1:1 v/v), B (Red Brick powder), PB: (Peatmoss + Red Brick powder 1:1 v/v), and PB_2 (Peatmoss + Red Brick powder 1:2 v/v). Results showed that the heaviest fresh and dry weight of seedling were recorded with the PV media, while the lowest fresh anddry values were obtained by using red brick powder alone. Net assimilation rate (NAR) high value was obtained in the PV media followed by PS (Peatmoss : Sand 1:1). The lowest NAR value was detected in case of sowing seed in red bricks powder alone. Cultivation seeds in PV media led to obtain seedlings with high nitrogen and high chlorophyll contents . However, the highest total carbohydrates content of seedling was deteected in case of using VS media (vermiculite: sand 1:1) followed by the PV medium.
