Effect of planting media on the germination of Cycas revoluta thumb seeds

This work was carried out in the planthouse of the Agriculture Museum-Dokki, Cairo, Egypt-during the two successive seasons of 1995 and 1996. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of different planting media on the germination ofCycas revoluta seeds. Cycas revoluta seeds were planted in six plantin media (sand, clay, peatmoss, sand + peatmoss, sand + peatmoss + clay and clay + sand) in the two seasons. The seeds were planted in 25 cm clay pots with the different planting media,and were kept in uncontrolled planthouse. It is appeared that using a media of clay or a mixture of peatmoss+sand (1-1 V/V) gave food germination percentages and the shortest time for germination. Using peatmoss or clay media gave the best results of vegetative growth "plant height, leaf number/plant and root length cm/plant" comparing with the other planting medias used.
