Development and release of some new tomato hybrids. III. hybridfruit chemical characteristics and their heterosis

This study was conducted at Barrage Horticulture Research Station, El-Kanater, Kalubia during 1995 to 1997 to evaluate chemical fruit characteristics of some recently-produced tomato hybrids. Based on evaluation studies of potential true-breeding parental lines and improved varieties, seeds of 21 hybrids were produced and evaluated for chemical fruit characteristics in the 1996 summer season along with their parents. Consequently, 14 of them were re-evaluated in 1997 summer season along with theirparents. Cv. Castleking had the highest total soluble solids (TSS) value in 1996, being 6.1 percent, but it was not significantly different from Cvs. UC 204-A, Clairvil, E 9209, Redstar, Pearsonett, Giza 80, Moneymaker, and Chico III and hybrids ClairvilX Oxheart, Castleking X Giza 80, Redstar X Giza 80 and E 9209 X Oxheart. In 1997, hybrid Money-maker X Castlerock had the highest value of TSS over all cvs. and hybrids evaluated, but it was not significantly different from cv. Castleking and hybrids Castlerock X VFNT, Clairvil X Castlerock and Clairvil X VFNT. All hybrids evaluated in 1996 exhibited negative heterosis over the better parent in TSS content except hybrids Castlerock X VFNT, Clairvil X Oxheart, and Pakmor B X VFNT which showed low positive heterosis. In 1997, eight out of 14 hybrids exhibited positive heterosis.
