Two types of results about public perceptions of risk concerning genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are presented. On the one hand, focus groups were used to study ordinary citizens' perceptions of GMOs. Perceptions held by actors engaged in theGMO controversy were also studied through interviews, participant observation and document analysis. The results suggest the persistence of myths about GMOs which are shared among numerous actors but which are not supported by the views of citizens in the focus groups.
