The Attiki Odos motorway near Athens is already an international award winner. Recent and timetabled change to its management and customer services systems will improve operations even further. Attiki Odos is a 70km motorway connecting central Athens with surrounding regions and other major developments. It has significantly affected the day-to-day life of most Athenians and the Integrated Toll and Traffic Management System (ITTMS) plays an important role in the Attiki Odos customer experience. Attiki Odos was the first Design, Build, Finance and Operate roadway concession awarded in Greece and was opened in several stages between 2001 and 2004. IBI Group provided the ITTMS for Attiki Odos using a system manager-type contract, a significant departure from the more usual system delivery type of arrangement. This unique approach to design, development, installation and integration resulted in significant cost and schedule savings. Risks, rewards, and responsibility were shared between the Attiki Odos Construction Joint Venture and IBI Group.
