Chromosome Studies on Puerto Rican Ferns (Gleicheniaceae)

Puerto Rican species of the fern family Gleicheniaceae were studied cytologically.Acropterygium pectinatum(Willd.) NAKAI proved to be the most interesting, having the chromosome numbern=44, which has not previously been reported in this family. The results of all the cytological studies carried out up to now on Gleicheniaceae ferns give some reason for supposing that there are two ancestral basic numbers of chromosomes in this family,n=11 andn=17. All the numbers found nowadays in the members of the family are different combinations of these basic numbers.
