Lightning is one of our planet's most exhilarating, spectacular, powerful but potentially destructive natural phenomena. Damage to buildings and structures is one highly visible result of a lightning strike but a less obvious, yet more significant, effect is the failure of sensitive electric equipment. Most modern companies place heavy reliance on the uninterrupted functioning of their electrical systems and are highly dependent on electronic data and communications systems. Dependency on these systems has grown hugely over the past couple of decades and is likely to continue, yet many buildings, even those only a couple of decades old, were simply not designed with surge protection in mind. Nevertheless, protecting electronic equipment from the consequences of lightning activity is essential and not just because of the immediate disruption it can cause.
