There are only two planets that have been relatively ignored by the spacecraft armada we have sent to explore our Solar System: Pluto and Mercury. As the 'black sheep' of the planets, and at such an enormous distance from home, it is not too surprising that, to date, there has been little success in gaining funding for missions to Pluto. However, I have always found our near complete ignorance of Mercury more puzzling; the Roman messenger of the Gods appears to have had a few problems getting through to mission planners on Earth.
