Effect of cutting type and time of cultivation on leaf biomass of a traditional medicinal plant Adhatoda vasica Nees

Effect of different stem cuttings and time of cultivation on production of leaf biomass of a potential medicinal plant Adhatoda vasica Nees. was studied at Dibrugarh University under Upper Brahmaputra Valley Agroclimatic Zone of India during February2006 to April, 2008. Out of three cutting types tested, the terminal soft wood cuttings produced highest yield followed by middle semiwood cuttings and basal woody cuttings. Basal woody cuttings are not advisable for commercial cultivation of the plant.A. vasica is recommended for commercial cultivation as summer crop under this agroclimatic zone. June to November is the best period for the crop. The plant can easily be propagated through stem cuttings and it seems to be an advantage for the farmers todevelop the plant as an economically important medicinal plant of this region. The herb is used in 110 preparations.
