摘要

The Shimanami-kaido, or Nishi-Seto Expressway was opened for traffic service on May 1,1999. It is an exclusive vehicle road of 59.4 km in length, linking Onomichi city with Imabari City via Geiyo Islands. There are 10 long-span bridges in the route, including Tatara Bridge, the longest cable-stayed Bridge in the world and Koroshima-Kaikytt Bridges that consist of a series of three suspension bridges. To accomplish this project, many advanced technologies were developed. This paper describes an outline of issues, such as expansion of cable-stayed bridge span, aerodynamic design of a bridge with box-girder, rust preventive system for suspension bridge cables. bridge inspection and repair painting.
