Experiments were conducted to study the possibility and economic utilisation of biogas for generating electrical power, crop production with biogas slurry and way for pollution free environment. A 14 hp, 1500 rpm dual fuel engine with an alternator of10 KVA capacity was used for the study. The engine was exclusively run with diesel and it was compared with the biogas-diesel mixture for its rated capacity and economics of fuel consumption. The gas supplied to the engine was measured with a gas flow meter, It was found that the engine developed 935 kwh by consuming 142.50 ml diesel/h/bhp whereas it developed 9.30 kwh by consuming 35.36 ml diesel/h/bhp and 0.44 m~3/h/bhp biogas. Thus a saving of 75,2% diesel could be achieved besides getting nutrientrich manure Further, it was proved that the engine performed well when it was loaded upto 90% of its rated capacity. The biogas slurry obtained was applied to ADT 38 rice crop 10.0 t ha~(-1). The growth, yield, nutrient uptake and post harvest nutrient status of soil were higher with bio-digested slurry application compared to FYM and control.
