An attempt was made to study the variability and other genetic parameters in 88 advance lines of Kalanamak aromatic non-basmati rice. Significant variations were observed for all the traits studied under the present investigation. The phenotypic coefficient of variation was higher than the corresponding genotypic coefficient of variations indicating influence of environmental expression for these characters. Considering parameters, high phenotypic coefficient of variation (PCV) and genotypic coefficientof variation (GCV) were observed for number of filled grains per panicle and grain yield per plant followed by number of spikelet's per panicle, number of effective tillers per plant and 1000-grain weight whereas days to 50% flowering and days to maturity showed very low PCV and GCV. High heritability coupled with high genetic advance as percent of mean (GAPM) was observed for characters like 1000-grain weight, number of spikelet's per panicle and number of filled grains per panicle indicated that these characters under additive gene control and selection for improvement might be effective. Days to maturity and panicle length showed moderate to high heritability but low genetic advance (GA) %, which indicated that non-additive gene action were involved for phenotypic expression of these characters. In the present investigation we observed that varietal hybridization of aromatic x aromatic rice and aromatic x basmati rice is very useful breeding methods for obtaining high variability for useful yieldand yield component traits.
