Effect of sulphur levels on growth, yield and quality of Mustard (Brassica juncea (L.) Czern and Coss) varieties

A field experiment, consisting of four levels of sulphur (0, 20, 40 and 60 kg ha~(-1)) and three varieties of mustard [Brassica juncea (L) Czern & Coss.] viz. Kranti, Basanti and Maya, was carried out in Randomized block design with three replicationsduring rabi season 2011-12 at Agronomical research farm NDUA and T Kumarganj Faizabad Uttar Pradesh to assess the effect of sulphur levels on mustard varieties. Results revealed that the Cultivar Bassanti performed best in terms of Growth, yield and Quality attributing characters, followed by Maya, which were found significantly higher over Kranti under different Sulphur levels. Application of sulphur 60 Kg ha'1 produced significantly higher seed yield (19.75 q ha"1) and other yield attributes viz. number of branches plant'1 (22.75), Plant height (153.26 cm), Leaf area index (3.62), Dry matter (44.11g plant"1) number of siliquae plant"1 (286.78), test weight of seeds (4.36g), stover yield (64.22 q ha~(-1)), oil content (36.82 %), oil yield (7.32 q ha~(-1)), as compared to control (0 Kg ha~(-1)) which found statistically at par with Sulphur 40 Kg ha~(-1). Hence, the farmer's could be economically benefited by using mustard variety Basanti with 60 Kg sulphur ha~(-1).
