Seed studies in Hiptage madablota Gaertn. - a climbing shrub

Hiptage madablota Gaertn. is a climber of many medicinal properties. Germination and viability studies were conducted using the seeds. Germination studies were carried out using BP method. Seed viability was tested using TP method periodically. It wasfound that seeds are viable for eight months under room temperature. H. madablota Gaertn. (Malpighiaceae) is a handsome evergreen climbing shrub with attractive fragrant flowers. Besides its ornamental value it has many medicinal properties. The leavesand vine are beneficial in asthma, chronic rheumatism and skin diseases, expressed juice applied externally in scabies (Chatterjee and Pakrashi, 1994). The wood is used for tool handles and as fuel (Anonymous, 1959). The propagation is mainly by seeds. Seed being a biological propagule serves as a connecting link between two generations of the plant species and is responsible for the maintenance of genetic continuity of the species. Seed studies were carried out to know the germination success and viability.
