摘要

In the present study, a ground water quality survey was carried out in Hosur, an industrially populated town.The sampling points (wells) are located in GPS.The samples of ground water are collected and analyzed for 10 physicochemical parameters and the status of water quality is assessed using Water Quality Index (WQI). The sources of water to Hosur, Karnataka, India are surface water sources and ground water sources. Surface water sources include: (a) Krishanarao Lake, (b) Chandrambai Lake, (c) Ramanackai Lake, (d) Therpet Lake, (e) Doddan Lake, (f) Kelevarapalli Dam. The ground water sources include bored wells and dug wells. Ground water in the ancient times was considered to be fresh, but ground water pollution now receives attention since the ground water quality is declining. The important sources and causes of ground water pollution in the study area are: (a) salinity intrusion in coastal aquifers, (b) sewer leakages, (c) leachates from dumps, (d) graveyards, (e) sewage disposal land, (f) industrial sources, (g) fertilizer applications, (h) construction activities, (i) stock piles, (j) spillages, (k) leakages and (1) animal and human wastes. In addition to these, hydrogeology, extent of pumping and administration and urbanization also influence the ground water quality.
