Some limnological aspects of seasonal pools in Ahar river Udaipur with reference to human interference and organic waste management

A stretch of Bearch river system namely Ahar river from Thoor Ki pal to Udaisagar was studied during post monsoon period for selected water quality parameters. The upper stretch of river showed low inorganic phosphate (0.10 ppm) and zooplankton (2.5 No./l) and high total alkalinity (235.7 ppm), whereas, middle part near Udaipur city had higher EC, total and faecal coliforms (>2400 & 24 MPN/100 ml), thereby indicating impact of human interference. Lower stretch of this river receiving industrial effluents exhibited higher pH, medium total alkalinity and comparatively high density of zooplankton especially in impounded pools. However, low zooplankton density was noticed in the vicinity of industrial pollutants discharged from pesticides industries. The results clearly evidenced impact of human interference on the water quality of upper and lower stretches of this seasonal river. Appropriate management measures have been suggested in this paper to check pollution caused by domestic wastes from nearby human settlements.
