Plate-Type NaV_3O_8 Cathode by Solid State Reaction for Sodium-Ion Batteries

Layered NaV_3O_8 was prepared by solid-state reaction at 400cC and the phase was confirmed by Synchrotron XRD. The FE-SEM and BET studies revealed plate-type morphologies of micrometer-sized particles with surface area of 7 m~2 g~(-1). When tested for Na-ion insertion properties, the plate-type NaV_3O_8 cathode registered reversible discharge capacities of 90 mAh g~(-1). (100% of theoretical value) with a well-defined plateau around 2.5 V and decent capacity retentions at 0.16 C current density. The impressive retention of 61% initial capacity at 10.2 C current densities was attributed to the structural integrity, high surface area and the plate-type morphology.
