Genetic diversity and genetic structure analysis of the natural populations of Lilium brownii from Guangdong, China.

Introduction:A large genus with abundant species and cultivars, Lilium is known as the king of flower bulbs (Long et al. 1999). It has been widely used in medicine, the food industry, and the flower market. Although China is a distribution center of Lilium, the breeding of lilies is less developed in China, and more than half of the wild species with excellent properties have not been exploited and utilized.Lilium brownii F. E. Brown ex Miellez, the brown lily, is an endemic species to China (Long and Zhang 1998; Xia and Gao 2001) and is widely distributed in southern China. It has a long cultivation history in Holland (Wilson 1925; van Tuyl et al. 1996). It has good stress resistance and has been used as an important parent for the modern Olympic series (Long et al. 1999; Long 2000) and Asiatic hybrids (Muisers et al. 1995; Zhang et al. 2004).
